The European School Sport Day is inspired by the Hungarian School Sport Day.
The European School Sport Day is inspired by the Hungarian School Sport Day, an event organised by the Hungarian School Sport Federation (HSSF) for over a decade.
In 2014, MOVE Transfer helped HSSF scale up the day in Hungary by expanding to regional schools and including activities for children with special needs.
In 2015, the Day was transferred and piloted in Bulgaria, Poland and Hungary with a grant from the European Union, which resulted in the first European School Sport Day (ESSD).
In 2016 the ESSD was rolled out to include 20 more countries.
By 2017, it was already being organised in over 25 countries.
In 2018, the ESSD was the biggest European Week of Sport event. The day is dedicated to promoting physical activity, trying out new ways of delivering physical education and school sport, and of course, to making every child feel that they belong in their school.
